Auburn High School senior Khan Bakhtyar Shairani has been admitted to Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania and has been awarded a full four-year QuestBridge National College Match scholarship.

On receiving news of the scholarship, Khan Bakhtyar says: “It was perhaps one of the best moments of my life, I felt as if it was a dream and had to check over and over again whether it was actually real. I felt a huge weight be taken off my shoulders and the ability to say I am going to a great school in the country and my parents nor I will be stuck with a large debt.”

Khan’s family emigrated from Pakistan in 1999. He was raised with an appreciation for education and a willingness to succeed in life. His academic interests include economics, government, and history. At college, he hopes to continue his involvement in debate teams, community service groups along with some intramural sports. He is among the first-generation in his family to attend college.

Khan’s accomplishments are impressive, especially given the context of this year’s application cycle. Now in its tenth year, the 2013-2014 QuestBridge National College Match received 12,818 applications from students across the nation, the highest number to-date. QuestBridge selected 4,773 finalists and 440 students were ultimately selected by QuestBridge partner colleges to become College Match recipients.

“It has always been the goal of QuestBridge to demonstrate to these extraordinary students that an excellent education is within their reach financially,” said Ana McCullough, the CEO and co-founder of QuestBridge. “The College Match Scholarship, which is completely loan-free and with no parental contribution, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” In addition to early admission, College Match recipients are guaranteed a full four-year scholarship from the partner college, covering tuition, room & board, and other expenses.
