Girls Varsity could not find the net and lost to Pittsfield 1-0 in Saturday’s away match. The Rockets (D3) and the Generals (D1) face off annually in this non-league challenge. The score could have gotten away from Auburn if it weren’t for the outstanding goaltending by sophomore Sarah Fahey who had 16 saves on the afternoon.
Auburn controlled much of the first half, and it looked like a good shot on net would give them the upper hand. The Generals’ defense, however, was not going to let it happen. With few exceptions, any drives were halted as two defenders smothered the Auburn forwards. Pittsfield’s keeper, sophomore Allie Hunt, only had to make 6 saves. The first half ended 0-0.
At 21:49 in the second, the Generals’ Allie Supranowicz centered a ball from the right corner, and Nicole Alfonsi one touched it into the net. No goalie would have had a chance on this beautiful shot. The Generals’ squad is older and bigger the Rockets, and Auburn has to find some answers for their young team.
Coach Midura said he was disappointed with the game and several missed scoring opportunities. While both teams played very hard, the Auburn offense attempted with little success to dribble closer to the goal. Midura added, “Sometimes you’ve got to let it fly.” Monday’s game with Millbury will be the first time to see Midura’s corrections.
The yearly contest between Auburn and Pittsfield will hopefully continue. If for no other reason, both teams have very good sophomore goalies who deserve a rematch. As the Rockets gain strength and size, they will certainly perform better.
