Carl Westerman is proud of many things, his service in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, his service to the Town of Auburn as a police officer for over 15 years and as a Selectman for 9 years, but he is most proud of starting Keeping Auburn Warm. This non-profit has filled many oil tanks for elderly or struggling Auburn citizens.
As a Marine sergeant in Vietnam, Westerman learned some principles of leadership that he wants to bring back to the Board: Make decisions; Stand by your decisions; and, Follow through. Westerman is a private detective licensed by the Massachusetts State Police. He and his wife, Cheryl, have two grown children, one a Worcester teacher and one a West Boylston police officer.
AMD: What do you feel qualifies you to be an Auburn Selectman?
Westerman: I served 9 years on the board. With some time off, I’ve been able to look at things in a different way. I’m ready to come back. I would again hold office hours once a week like I did in my past terms. This gives residents a chance to talk about things that concern them.
Everything put out to the people has to be true. I tell the truth. When I do things, I do it the right way.
AMD: What would you improve in local government?
Westerman: We need to keep up with the times whether it’s police, fire, roads, computers or our schools. The selectmen should back the schools. They’re doing a great job, and I want to keep it that way.
AMD: What do you feel are the top two issues facing the Board of Selectmen?
Westerman: The residential and business tax rates. I think businesses should take on a bigger portion of the cost of government. Many of the business owners don’t live in town, but they sure take our money.
We also have to help our senior citizens. The senior center needs an upgrade. Seniors deserve a lot. Most have lived here all their lives. They don’t need bigger tax bills so businesses can make more profits.
AMD: What will you personally bring to the Board?
Westerman: Ideas. I call it like I see it. We represent the people and we represent the town. We need to keep going for the future.
AMD: Do you have any suggestions to keep Auburn on its strong financial track?
Westerman: If you can’t afford it, you don’t do it. We have one heck of a Town Manager and one heck of an Assistant. Budgets are being done the proper way. How many towns can claim to be as good as us?
