AUBURN- Joseph J.”Joe” Sczurko, Sr., 85, of Auburn, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester.
He leaves his beloved wife of 61 years, Paula (Kien) Sczurko; a daughter, Maria Tuniewicz and her husband, Thomas of Southbridge; a son, Joseph J. Sczurko, Jr., and his wife, Nancy of Windham, Maine; four grandchildren, Sarah and Rachel Tuniewicz and Joseph, III and Sophia Sczurko; and several nieces and nephews in Slovakia. He was predeceased by a brother, Juraj Sczurko and sister, Margita Kovac, both of Slovakia.
Joe was born in Worcester, and raised as a boy in Humenne, Slovakia, son of the late Mikaly and Maria (Mindova) Sczurko. Joe proudly served his county with the United States Army stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict.
He had worked as a wire drawer for Thompson Wire Company in Worcester for over 45 years.
Joe was an avid Boston sports fan, and enjoyed watching the Red Sox. He adored his cats and was a passionate gardener, growing flawless tomatoes and peppers every year. He and his wife, Paula, traveled throughout Europe many times and particularly enjoyed spending time in Slovakia where he was raised. He was a member of the Greendale Retired Men’s Club in Worcester and a longtime parishioner of North American Martyr’s Parish in Auburn.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Joe’s family on Monday, April 28, 2014 from 5-7 PM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St, Auburn. His funeral will be from the funeral home on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 with his funeral Mass celebrated at 10 AM in North American Marty’s Church, 8 Wyoma Avenue, Auburn. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn
