Groundbreaking Ceremony April 17

By John Anderson

Although the official groundbreaking won’t occur until April 17th, contractors are already hard at work on this ambitious project. With a construction schedule of a year and a half, there are many jobs to be done, and Fontaine Bros., Inc. has hit the ground running.

According to Construction Superintendent Bill Faneuf, they had one person on site on March 10 to do layout work. On March 12 erosion control measures were taken to comply with environmental concerns and the listed conditions of the Conservation Commission.

Mr. Faneuf described this project as “fast track” and all sub-contractors knew this before they bid. Friday was Day 18 of the project, and site work was occurring all over. Drainage and movement of dirt were the obvious activities, but much goes on behind the scene. On a major construction project, having the right materials when they are needed is critical. You can’t just run to the Depot for 1,000 pieces of rebar.

In a recent press release, School Superintendent Maryellen Brunelle announced the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new middle school:

“The new Auburn Middle School Groundbreaking Ceremony has been scheduled for Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. (rain or shine). Students from grades K to 6, along with the current Middle School Band and Chorus groups, will be the focus of this event, along with the customary dignitaries.

The students in grades K to 6 will be writing essays in response to prompts given and one student from each grade in each school will then be chosen to represent their school at the ceremony. Students will participate in the Pledge of Allegiance, some will read excerpts from the winning essays, with the remainder wearing hard hats and taking part in the actual “groundbreaking.”

This event is open to the public and will take place on the grounds of the new Auburn Middle School, 7 West Street, Auburn.
On behalf of the students who will attend the new Auburn Middle School, sincere thanks are offered to the entire Auburn community for their support of this building project.”

Auburn Mass Daily will be following the construction and publishing stories as they develop. These are exciting times for the Auburn Public Schools.
