At Monday’s home basketball game, Auburn High’s spirited students celebrated “America Night.” Monday was also Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Celebrating America recognizes all the people who helped make our nation great, not perfect, but still great. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of those people, and the way he brought change is one of his greatest legacies.
Nonviolence was the principle of King’s efforts, and it worked time and time again. It is sad and ironic that King’s life was cut short by the violent act of one man.
The United States has come a long way since 1968, but we have more to do.
When “all men are created equal”, King’s dream will be fulfilled. Not until then.
