Alvin H. “Al” Gilbert, 78, of Auburn, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 in the comfort of his home. His beloved wife of 50 years, the late Mildred E. (McCarthy) Gilbert, passed away in April of 2020.

Al leaves his children, Robin Gilbert-Newcomb, of Ware, and Rick Gilbert, of Auburn; his grandsons, Christopher Newcomb, of Oxford, Eric Newcomb, of Auburn, and Kevin Newcomb, of North Brookfield; his great-grandson, James Newcomb, of Auburn; his siblings, Daniel Gilbert, Ronald “Ronny” Gilbert, Diann Dempsey, and Sandra Grudinsky; along with many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brother, David L. Gilbert; and their parents, Daniel W. Gilbert and May (Ivatts) Gilbert.

Born in Worcester, raised and educated in Millbury, Al was a graduate of Millbury High School. On December 27, 1969, he married the love of his life, Milly, and the two began their life together. They eventually settled in Auburn, on Bancroft Street, where they lived for the next 50-some years. Al worked as a printer for Hefernan Printing in Worcester, for many years, before retiring.

In his free time, Al loved playing chess, and had a great love for computers.

His family will be celebrating his life privately, and he will be buried beside Milly in Hillside Cemetery. The Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, Auburn, is honored to be assisting with arrangements.
