John W. McDermott, 67, of Gulfport, MS – formerly of Pensacola, FL and Auburn, MA, passed away on April 21, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.

Born in Worcester and raised in Auburn, he was one of six children born to Joan E. (Bylund) McDermott and the late Richard T. McDermott. John was a graduate of Auburn High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, serving proudly until 1973 when he was honorably discharged. John graduated from Clark University with a Bachelor’s degree. He worked as a software engineer for the U.S. Department of Defense, until retirement.

He loved exploring the outdoors, traveled extensively, was an avid supporter of Pensacola’s local restaurants, and was a member of the American Legion Post 340. John loved to live life, and made every day an adventure whether it was spent gardening, fishing, cooking up a delicious meal, or exploring nature’s bounty.

John leaves his children, Chad D. McDermott and his wife Kristi, of Charlton, Sean W. McDermott, of Pensacola, FL, and Beth A. Scopetski and her husband Neal, of Auburn; his grandchildren, Caleb, Peyton, Ethan, and Landon; siblings, Lisa J. Beegles, of Clearwater, FL, Heidi L. Perrin, of North Brookfield, and Richard T. McDermott, Jr., of Auburn; as well as many nieces and nephews. Along with his father, John was predeceased by his siblings, Lon E. McDermott and Holly E. McDermott and his daughter Sherrie A. McDermott.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church.

Relatives and friends are invited to John’s graveside service, with military honors, which will be held at 10 am on June 18th, 2021 at the Westridge Section of Hillside Cemetery.
