The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that it will be implementing a temporary overnight closure of the ramps at Interstate 290 westbound at exit 11 (College Square) and exit 16 (East Central Street) in Worcester. The ramp closures will take place beginning at 10 p.m., on Sunday, June 6, and 9 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, and reopening the next morning at 4:00 a.m. The closures are needed to facilitate routine construction operations.
The closures are as follows:
Overnight on Sunday, June 6, between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. the I-290 eastbound exit 11 (College Square) off-ramp will be closed.
Traffic will be directed to follow the detour signage in place and use exit 13 (Rte. 122, Vernon St.) to reverse direction to I-290 westbound back to exit 11.
Overnight on Tuesday, June 8, between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. the following morning, the I-290 eastbound exit 16 (East Central Street) on-ramp and off-ramp will be closed. Both ramps will not be closed at the same time.
Traffic looking to exit I-290 eastbound from this location will be directed to follow the detour signs in place and continue on I-290 eastbound to exit 17 (Route 9) back to I-290 westbound.
Traffic looking to enter I-290 eastbound at this location will be directed follow the detour signage in place and use the exit 18 (Lincoln Street) on-ramp.
Message boards, signs, traffic control devices, and law enforcement details will be used to guide drivers safely through the work zone.
MassDOT encourages drivers to seek alternate routes, reduce speed and use caution while approaching and traveling through the work zone.
