The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is advising the public that Monday, January 18, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, that state government offices will be closed including the Registry of Motor Vehicles Customer Service Center locations. MassDOT encourages anyone traveling during this holiday period to monitor roadway and weather conditions, plan ahead, check on MBTA service schedules, and be cognizant of the current COVID-19 protocols and procedures such as wearing face coverings, maintaining social distancing, and following quarantine travel guidelines.
“We are encouraging members of the public who are planning to travel around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to plan ahead, use available traffic and weather resources and tools and be familiar with current COVID guidelines before you leave home,” said Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. “COVID guidance is readily available to help inform travelers of potential impacts and current restrictions that are in place to help keep everyone healthy and safe during this challenging time.”
General information regarding COVID-19 and specific guidance on traveling during the pandemic, including the need to quarantine for 14 days when returning to Massachusetts after visiting specific identified states, can be found at www.mass.gov/coronavirus. In addition, travel-related information can be found on www.mass.gov/MAtraveler, the website that was set up when the Governor’s Executive Order pertaining to travel was signed.
The MBTA has announced the following schedule information for Monday, January 18:
Subways, buses, and The RIDE will operate on a Saturday schedule.
Commuter Rail and ferry service will operate on a weekday schedule.

The High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane on I-93 between Boston and Quincy will have normal morning hours this week, and will extend its afternoon hours on Thursday, January 14, to be open from 2:00 p.m., to 8:00 p.m., and on Friday, January 15, to be open from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The HOV lane will not be deployed on Monday, January 18, and will be open on Tuesday, January 19, during normal weekday hours.
In addition, RMV Customer Service Centers will be closed on Monday, January 18, and will reopen by appointment only on Tuesday, January 19. Customers can visit the RMV website at www.Mass.Gov/RMV to learn about more than 40 transactions that are available online. In addition, AAA members can conduct select RMV transactions by appointment at AAA locations.
