The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that the installation of new milepost-based signs for exits on Route 6 and Interstate 90 begins the week of Sunday, December 13, and occurs during overnight hours each night, from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following day.

MassDOT’s Statewide Exit Renumbering Project is converting all exit numbers on roadways, per Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requirements. Interstates and roadways in Massachusetts have always previous to this project utilized a sequential exit numbering method.

The exit renumbering work is scheduled to begin along I-90 next week, on Sunday, December 13, with crews beginning in Boston and working westbound to the border with New York. Then crews will work on I-90 eastbound from the New York border to Boston with approximately 2 weeks to complete work in each direction. Work is scheduled to take place during overnight hours, beginning at 8:00 p.m. through 5:00 a.m. the next morning.

Meanwhile, installation of new exit signs on Route 6 on Cape Cod will begin next week, on Monday, December 14, with crews starting in Bourne and proceeding eastward to Orleans. After eastbound installations are complete, crews will work on Route 6 westbound with approximately 1 week to complete work in each direction. Work will typically be completed during the overnight hours of 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the next day.

All work is weather dependent and construction dates may be adjusted as conditions warrant.
