LEOMINSTER/FITCHBURG– The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing it will be implementing temporary overnight roadway closures on Route 2 eastbound and westbound near exit 31 in Leominster and Fitchburg. During the work, Route 2 eastbound and westbound in the vicinity of the railroad bridge will be closed overnight from Sunday, October 4 through Thursday, October 8, and from Tuesday, October 13 through Thursday, October 15 between 9:00 p.m., and 5:00 a.m., the following morning. The work is anticipated to take approximately 2 weeks. This closure will support the demolition of the railroad bridge over Route 2 for Phase I of the Twin City Rail Trail Project.
Detours will be in place as follows:
· All eastbound traffic will be detoured off Route 2 at exit 31. The detour will direct traffic down Hamilton Street to Route 13 to access Route 2 at exit 32 (Route 13 Leominster/Lunenburg).
· All westbound traffic will be detoured off Route 2 at exit 32. The detour will direct traffic to Route 13 and onto Hamilton Street. From Hamilton Street, traffic will be routed on to Route 12, and then back onto Route 2 at exit 31.
Appropriate signage, law enforcement details, and advanced message boards will be in place to guide drivers through the work area.
Drivers who are traveling through the area should reduce speed and use caution.
All scheduled work is weather dependent and may be impacted due to an emergency.
