In an all-too-familiar statement yesterday, Auburn’s summer events schedule at Dr. Arthur and Dr. Martha Pappas Recreation Complex has been cancelled for 2020. The news is not shocking, but it is unfortunate for many. As one comment on the Town Facebook Page put it, “I and not surprised, but it makes me sad to see it.”
Towns and cities across the country are cancelling parades, festivals, concerts, fairs and nearly all large gathering events this summer based due to the coronavirus pandemic that has now taken the lives of over 100,000 Americans. While social distancing along with mask-wearing has been shown to reduce the risk of transmission significantly, it is not foolproof.
Another issue is some people’s unwillingness to comply with social distancing and mask-wearing recommendations. With events that can draw as many as 5,000 people, policing behavior is not possible.
