Fifty years ago this season, the Auburn High School Boys Varsity Hockey Team won the Division 1 State Championship at the Boston Garden. They beat Arlington 3-2 after Ray Bylund scored in sudden death overtime. This was the first state championship for Auburn High School in any varsity sport, and the victory was the first by a Central or Western Massachusetts team since 1952.

On Saturday, January 27th, the team will be recognized at Horgan Arena between a 6PM Girls Varsity game and an 8PM Boys Varsity game. The event is being organized by Athletic Director Brian Davis and former team member Phil Dumas (Dooley’s Cleaners). Many from the ’67-’68 roster have been contacted, but Davis wants all players to attend if possible. If friends or relatives can help reach out, it would be appreciated. Davis can be contacted at Auburn High School, and Dumas can be reached at Dooley’s.

Although Coach Dick Longueil is no longer with us, he would likely be extremely proud of this event as he was of the Dandies in 1968 when they finished with a 26-1-0 record. During the season, the team scored 141 goals and only had 30 against them. Their only loss, in fact, was to Southborough’s St. Mark’s Prep School in a non-league game, 2-1.

In researching Auburn Hockey a bit, some great information has been discovered, and Auburn Mass Daily will be doing a follow-up story before the 27th. Local Auburn Hockey fans certainly do not want to miss this event.
