During the field hockey season Coach Bethann Cormier has never dismissed another team on paper although her players always have on the field. When these two teams last met October 2, Auburn got the win 4-0. On a frigid Monday night in Lunenberg, the #1 Rockets not only beat #4 Quaboag Regional 2-0, but they clinched the MIAA Semi-Final round and will face #3 Littleton on Thursday in the final district competition. The district champion will move on to the state playoffs. Auburn is a very impressive 21-0.

Quaboag coach John O’Neill is in his 30th season for the Cougars, and he has prepared them well. The Cougars came out very aggressively, and they tried to be the predators their name suggests. Despite several favorable calls including one stretch of three corners in a row, they could not capitalize. Quaboag had 0 shots on net including their 6 corners.

In a tight competition with Quaboag goalie Abi Cote, Lyndsey Gabrielian took a shot that ricocheted off the pads. At the 23:00 mark, Carly Zona secured the ball and shot the Rockets’ first goal. Gabrielian earned the assist. There were numerous opportunities for both teams during the first half, but the Rockets were off their mark offensively while their defense fortunately hung tough. When the half ended, the Auburn fans were feeling fairly confident, but the Quaboag fans showed their frustration.

Tensions probably escalated further when Jackie Matthews scored Auburn’s second goal less than seven minutes into the second. There was no assist as Matthews moved the ball around Cote and found her opportunity. The Rockets would amass 9 corners and 12 shots on net, 4 by Jamie McNamara. The Cougars finished their game admirably and with great spirit as Abi Cote earned 9 saves.

The final will be on Thursday at 5:30PM in Grafton. Littleton comes to the field pumped from Monday’s 2-1 victory over #2 Narragansett. They lost in the final round last year to Oakmont and have a record of 19-2-0. This has all the makings of a great game.
