A passerby noticed a distressed dog left in a car at the Auburn Plaza on Southbridge Street on Wednesday afternoon. After notifying authorities, police and animal control were able to locate the owner and free the dog. The dog, a shepherd mix who goes by Chloe, is expected to be fine.

The owner of the dog and the vehicle was given a $150 citation by Animal Control Officer, Aimee Contois. The temperature inside the car was estimated between 100 and 120 degrees, according to police, even though the windows were left cracked open.

Auburn Police remind everyone, “Now that summer is upon us, remember that vehicles in the sun heat up quickly to unsafe temperatures.” Just do not leave pets or humans in cars in the summer time.
