Today could be turbulent, weather-wise

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch and a special weather statement affecting our area for today.

The flash flood watch will be in effect from 12:00pm today until 4am Tuesday morning. According to the NWS, ” Numerous Showers and thunderstorms with areas of torrential rainfall will impact the region from mid afternoon into tonight. The time period of greatest concern is between 2 and 10 pm this evening.”

Some areas could receive as much as 2″ of rain in an hour or less, leading to flash flooding in low-lying areas. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways. The greatest chance for such torrential rain is expected to be west of I-91, but residents are encouraged to monitor local weather conditions.

There is also the threat of some severe thunderstorms this afternoon. The main severe weather threat will be locally damaging wind gusts, says the NWS, but hail cannot be ruled out with the strongest storms. An isolated tornado is also a possibility.

“Dangerous cloud to ground lightning will accompany some of these storms this afternoon and evening.” says the NWS statement. “Torrential rainfall may result in pockets of urban and localized flash flooding, perhaps having a significant impact on the evening commute. Please pay close attention to any watches or warnings that may be issued into this evening. Remember, if you hear thunder you are close enough to get struck by lightning, so seek an indoor shelter immediately.”
