Baroni Gets Hat Trick

By John Anderson

In one of their better-played games of the season, Auburn girls soccer added a tenth win by defeating Uxbridge 4-1. Although a single goal by Jianna Baroni with an assist by Kayla Almstrom was the single score in the first half, the Rockets dominated both offensively and defensively. The Spartans only moved the ball beyond mid-field a few times, and then they were turned back by Auburn’s solid defense.

Baroni scored 8.5 minutes into the second with a Symantha Brothers assist, and Uxbridge would follow with their only goal. Courtney Pepin found the net with the help of Jessica Fitzgerald. In MIAA Central, and as of October 20, Fitzgerald and Baroni both had 25 points while Pepin had 24. Almstrom is at 21 points. Monday was not the day for Uxbridge to add significantly to their numbers. For Auburn, Baroni plus 3, and Almstrom plus 2.

With 9:27 left in the game, Almstrom crashed the net and scored off a Brothers kick. At 7:00 Baroni scored again and earned a hat trick for the match. Jordym Abasciano had the assist. In SWCL, Auburn is 10-4-1 and Uxbridge is 6-10. It is hard to say why two Uxbridge players are high in the MIAA stats when their team is far from a 500 season.

The Rockets end their regular season this week, and it won’t be easy. They play three away games: Thursday at D1 Tantasqua (8-9), Friday at powerhouse Northbridge (13-0-2), and Saturday at D1 Wachusett (9-1-6). The Auburn Mass Daily wishes them the best of luck and looks forward to some great playoff games.
