The Town of Auburn will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of Robert Goddard’s groundbreaking launch of the first liquid-propellant rocket. In Auburn, MA, on a section of his Aunt Effie Ward’s farm at what is now Pakachoag Golf Course, Goddard successfully launched the first of his liquid – fueled rocket on March 16, 1926.

There will be a celebration on May 6th, from 12:30 –1:30pm at Pakachoag Golf Course, 15 Upland Street. The event will feature a rocket launch demonstration by students from Auburn Middle School, special guest speakers, and light refreshments.

In conjunction with the Auburn Rocket Day Celebration, the Department of Recreation and Culture is sponsoring a student poster contest. The poster contest rules are as follows:

1. All entries must be turned in by April 29, 2016. A town of Auburn representative will pick up entries.

2. A committee will judge the posters. The winners will be announced by the Recreation and Culture Director on May 6th, 2016

3. Each poster must be done on 12” x 18” white poster paper. The back of each poster must have the student’s name, School name, Grade, and Teacher’s name written clearly on the top of the page in the left hand corner.

4. Posters must illustrate, in some way, this year’s theme, “Celebrating Robert Godard first Rocket Launch from Auburn, Massachusetts!”

5. A grand prize will be awarded to the Best Poster Overall, regardless of grade. Overall Second Prize will be awarded as well. A prize will be awarded by grade and school for grade winners.

6. Posters will be judged on the basis of originality of ideas and representation of the theme. Neatness and artwork are not necessarily criteria for selection but they do help.

7. Prizes will be awarded July 1 at our Independence Day Celebration at Dr. Arthur and Dr. Martha Pappas Recreation Complex at 5:30 pm.

The Town is also celebrating the grand reopening of the Pakachoag Golf Course – which is now under town management – on May 6.  This will be quite a day for Auburn, save the date and join in! For questions or for more information, please call Kristen Pappas at 508-755-3291.
