by | Apr 11, 2016

BOSTON – Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) encourages parents and local residents to attend a substance abuse resource fair and awareness panel taking place Wednesday, April 27th at the Millbury High School from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The event, which is open to the public, will consist of a resource fair followed by an address from keynote speaker Chris Herren and a panel discussion. Panelists include representatives from Spectrum Health Services, Recovery High School, Learn-to-Cope, the Attorney General’s Office, and AdCare Hospital of Worcester. Topics of conversation will consist of the warning signs and effects of addiction, and resources available for treatment and recovery.

“Many of us have lost a friend, neighbor or family member to addiction, or know someone impacted by its destructive force,” said Sen. Moore who is a sponsor of the event. “As a legislator, and as a parent, I recognize that we cannot succeed at repelling this epidemic and reducing the risk to our families until we confront the realities of this challenge and take full advantage of the available resources. None of our children are immune from addiction issues or the potentially life-threatening consequences, which is why I’m encouraging parents to attend this event.”

“The City of Worcester’s Division of Public Health is pleased to support this important event with our community partners and the Town of Millbury, a member of the Central MA Regional Public Health Alliance,” said Dr. Matilde Castiel, who serves as Commissioner of Health & Human Services for the City of Worcester. “Substance abuse prevention is a priority of the Community Health Improvement Plan and as such, residents should avail themselves of the resources available to them and their loved ones that will provide support and guidance. The opioid epidemic is stealing the lives of so many, including young people, and impacting us all; the more we can do to educate the community the more lives we will hopefully save.”

“Everyone’s journey to recovery is different, which is why AdCare offers a wide range of treatment options from hospital-level care and inpatient residential treatment, to outpatient services and family programs; all giving individuals and families education, support, and hope that recovery is possible,” said Georganna Koppermann, Vice President of Marketing & Community Services for AdCare.

The event is made possible through the support and partnership of the Millbury Board of Health and Millbury Public Schools, Central Massachusetts Regional Public Health Alliance, Spectrum Health Systems, AdCare Hospital of Worcester and the Millbury Parents Club.
