Model RR Show Sets a Record

The 17th show for the Worcester Model Railroaders was a huge success at both the Auburn Elks and the club’s headquarters in Dudley. Spokesman Ralph Kimball told Auburn Mass Daily, “At the Auburn location, we had 582 paid and approximately 700 when the kids are added in. In Dudley, the attendance was about 300 including children.”

Kimball added, “It was wildly successful as attendance doubled over last year and was the highest in 17 years. At one point, we apparently ran out of parking. We received very favorable comments from those leaving the show and all the dealers did exceptionally well. Our high attendance was in contrast to falling attendance at other shows…”

As in the past, the Amherst Railway Society brought their modular layout to the Elks where it entertained viewers of multiple generations. There was also a larger contingent of children running trains on the layout which had to inspire observers.

A February 10th article in The Wall Street Journal was titled “End of the Line for Model Trains? Aging Hobbyists Trundle On.” That may be true somewhere, but not locally as evidenced on Sunday. The Worcester club has about 30 active members who meet on each Tuesday evening and on Saturday mornings.

Their Dudley location has a 43’ x 51’ room with a huge HO scale layout in various stages of completion. O and G scale trains were also running on Sunday. Unfortunately, their lease expires in another year, so the club is actively pursuing a new location. So, if you know of a wide-open space at a very reasonable rent, please contact the club.

Words do little to explain the Model Railroading hobby. Today’s slide show is certainly worth thousands of words.
