Fatal crash on I-395; Police seeking public’s help

by | May 9, 2015

A tragic scene unfolded on I-395 southbound Saturday afternoon.  According to Assistant Auburn Fire Rescue Department Chief Glenn Johnson, the AFRD and APD were requested to the scene on I-395 southbound, just before Exit 5 in Oxford (Depot Rd.) at 1:17pm. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found a single car rollover, and the driver had been ejected from the vehicle.  That individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, the accident was caused by a wheelbarrow in the high speed lane that is believed to have fallen from another vehicle. The initial report by Trooper Scott Shea found that one driver was able to  swerve into the median to avoid the wheelbarrow.  A 32 year old man who was traveling behind the woman swerved to the right, but lost control of his vehicle. The crash vehicle rolled, ejecting the driver.  Police are not releasing the driver’s identity pending notification of family.

Massachusetts State Police are asking for the public’s help to determine how the wheelbarrow ended up in the left hand southbound lane just before Exit 5 in Oxford.   If anyone has any information, or if anyone saw a wheelbarrow fall from a motor vehicle, please contact the State Police Barracks in Sturbridge at 508-347-3352.
