Life Care Center Dedicates Memorial Garden

Life Care Center of Auburn residents gathered last Thursday to remember loved ones and to dedicate a new garden in their memory.

In a touching service meant to coincide with Arbor Day, Life Care Center Spiritual Care Director, Pam Reidy invited residents to remember and honor residents of the Life Care Center who had passed on.  While most of those in attendance were current Life Care residents, there were a number of visitors who came for the service.

The original plan was to hold the ceremony outdoors, on the south lawn of Life Care Center, where a cherry blossom tree had recently been planted.  Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate; it was too cool for most of the residents so the service was moved indoors to the community room.

The cherry tree will serve as the centerpiece of a new garden planned for the space. “The plan was to have our residents place stones at the base of the tree” said Reidy. “The ‘real’ stones are not real, they are solar, so they give off a soft glow after sundown.  Instead, we will have the guests place a stone in a dish at the front of the room” she adds.

“We will also be offering memorial pavers, that families and residents can buy in memory of a loved one” Reidy said. ”  “We plan to have a walkway that will wind through gardens of flowers, vegetables and trees.  The residents will be able to come out here and garden or just enjoy it.”

During the service, guests were invited forward to place a stone in someone’s memory.  Some remembered friends, others remembered spouses, siblings, parents, and grandparents. The service was brief, but poignant, and was clearly appreciated by those in attendance.
