Trick or Treat Hours Announced

by | Oct 28, 2014

The trick or treat hours for this Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, are 5pm to 7pm.  According to a letter submitted by Auburn Police Chief Andrew Sluckis to the Board of Selectmen, APD will have additional patrols out during these hours to ensure a safe and fun Halloween.

While most kids eagerly anticipate Halloween trick or treating, there are safety concerns as well.  While most of the “tainted Halloween candy” stories are either unsubstantiated or urban legend, it is still wise to stick to neighborhoods and homes of people you know.

Walking around in costumes in the dark creates its own hazards.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children are four times more likely to be in fatal pedestrian accidents on Halloween than on any other night of the year.  This statistic isn’t meant to scare you – it’s meant to help you prepare your children for a safe Halloween.

When you’re planning your evening out, keep the following safety tips in mind:

  • Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Since masks can sometimes obstruct a child’s vision, try non-toxic face paint and makeup whenever possible.
  • Have kids use glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  • Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, remind them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
  • Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
  • When selecting a costume make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
