Going into last night’s game, the Rockets were 0-3 in boys soccer. Blackstone-Millville came in with both a slightly better 1-2 record and a lot of drive. Auburn spent the better part of the first half in front of their own net repelling attack after attack. But here’s the difference, the Rockets held off the Chargers on every single assault, and rookie goalie Alex Mularski garnered 18 saves and his first shutout as a varsity keeper.
In the 24th minute, Richie Augusto took a free kick from about 25 yards out, and the ball grazed the keeper’s fingertips before landing high in the net. 11 minutes later, Adam Gillies crossed the ball to Alex Strafer who beat two defenders and easily scored. From this point forward, Auburn just had to maintain their solid defense, and they did just that. Defense Captain Scott Williams talked highly of defenders James Krikorian and CJ Bernier who broke up numerous attacks.
After the 2-0 win, Coach Chris Bailey told the team, “This is, by far, the best team we have faced.” Blackstone-Millville is tough, and only great teamwork by the Rockets made the difference in this contest. Captain Richie Augusto complemented the younger players, “Most of these guys are new to varsity, and they played like they’ve been here for years.”
We hope this is a trend for the boys. If they can keep their focus and work as a team, this game will not be their last great victory. We will post a slideshow later today.
