Memorial Field was the host location for the MIAA Central D3 quarter final on Monday night for both boys and girls varsity soccer. The weather was not good on Monday, but it looked like things might clear up a bit by the 5PM start. That didn’t happen.
I arrived half way through the boys’ game with the intention of staying through at least half of the girls’ match. The Rockets already had a 1-0 lead thanks to a Nate Lewos score in the 32nd minute on this cold, wet evening. Goalie Coleman Picard made 7 saves to earn another shutout, and the boys moved to the semi-final with the 1-0 victory.
The girls scored first when Corinne Oliver hit the net, but the Rockets could not hold off Nipmuc’s Cate Flanagan who earned 4 goals. Allie Morawski also scored for Auburn, but they fell 6-2.
The boys play tonight at 5PM vs. Hudson in Lunenburg as the MIAA grows its carbon footprint by scheduling playoff games in remote locations that aren’t close to either team.
On Monday, and when the light rain didn’t stop, I took out my protected camera and grabbed some shots. I really didn’t think they would be very good, but I wanted something to run. Today’s slideshow depicts the tough conditions for both teams.
