John J. Palmer, 85 of West Yarmouth and Naples, FL, formerly of Auburn, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and children at the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich on August 27, 2018.
He was born on May 27, 1933 in Worcester, MA to Willis and Catherine Palmer. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1951, where he was captain of the basketball team. John attended College of the Holy Cross, before serving honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He later finished his education at Worcester School of Business Science. He had a long career in sales/sales management at the NYNEX Yellow Pages, retiring in 1988 after 36 years. John met the love of his life Joan Layden in 1959 and they married in 1960, making their home in Auburn where they raised 6 children. John was an avid golfer, and was a member of Cohassee Golf Club in Southbridge.
One of John’s greatest loves was Cape Cod. As a child he vacationed in West Yarmouth and grew to love the area. In 1966 John purchased a home with his brother Paul, where their families vacationed together creating great memories. John and Joan bought the house that they still call their home in 1984 where they have their greatest memories.
After retiring from the Yellow Pages, he became a part-time employee of Bayberry Golf Course in the pro shop and as a ranger for 20 years. John and Joan spent winters in Naples, FL. at Royal Wood Country Club, where they made great friends that have lasted decades. He was proud of his four hole-in-ones, and all the money he took from friends and family on the golf course.
John is survived by his children John Jr. and his wife Charlene of Orange County, California, Brian of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Ann-Marie and her husband Hon. John Julian of Dennis, Daniel and his wife Tricia of Winchester, David and his wife Melissa of Melrose and Tim and his wife Michelle of Melrose. John is predeceased by his son Jeffrey, his brother Willis, his sister Virginia Thompson, his sister Claire Barry, his sister Jean Provost and his brother Paul. He is also survived by his sister Rosemary Spillane of Worcester, by close friends Frank and Sally Graves of Auburn and his grandchildren, Jack, Jeffrey, Mike, Nick, Ashley, Tommy, Emily, Taylor, Daniel, Meaghan, Matt, Martin, Caroline and Clara who are his legacy. They all loved him very much and learned so much about family from him.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, August 30 from 4-7 PM at Morris, O’Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Drive, South Yarmouth, MA 02664. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. Francis Xavier Church, South Street, Hyannis, MA 02601. Internment with Military Honors will follow at 1:30 pm at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
