Auburn High Senior Julia Handfield signed her letter of intent with Boston University yesterday afternoon. In front of hundreds of her peers, coaches and family, Julia thanked everyone for their support over the years that helped make her scholarship possible.
Her father, AHS Principal Casey Handfield, told Auburn Mass Daily, “This is overwhelming for me as it is for Julia. Since she was 8 years old, she’s been playing softball all over the country. It’s been an extraordinary journey.”
Julia has been playing for the Concord Raiders over the past few years at the highest level of AAU Softball in the country. Not only is their program great for building athletes, but they also offer structure for the young players that incorporates study time and other activities. She has been playing at the 18-year-old level since she was 13.
Although the honors student has yet to officially declare a major, her interest in finance makes Boston University a perfect school in a perfect city with many opportunities. Over the last few years, about 20 schools have approached Julia, but the Terriers won this superb pitcher.
She said, “When I visited the campus, I knew this was the one.” As for her time with the Raiders, “Those were the best experiences of my entire life.”
“This is the moment I’ve been working for.”
