Many games were postponed last week because of rain, but varsity softball got to make it up on a spectacular Sunday

afternoon. The only negative on the day was the harsh late day sun making work in the field and outfield more challenging. Batters, of course, could see everything coming at them.

Rockets’ pitcher Julia Handfield struck out two in the first inning, and she would make 12 more strikeouts during the game while only allowing 4 hits. When the home team got to the plate, they would leave the bases loaded with no runs scored.

The Blue Devils scored twice in the top of the second, and Auburn got a lot of help from their pitcher in the latter part of the inning. Bases were quickly loaded on walks, and the Rockets racked up 4 runs, all started because of walks. In the third, Liz Simonian hit a line drive to bring home her sister, Alex. Handfield hit a solo homerun in the fourth, and sacrificed in the fifth to bring in one more. Auburn now had a 7-2 lead.

Leominster made a push in the sixth and scored 3 runs to make the game a little closer, 7-5, but the Rockets’ bats straightened things out in the bottom half. With 2 outs, a Blue Devil error at short stop allowed one run, and 2 more came on a line drive to right field making it 10-5, the game final.
