Cub Scout Packs 53, 101 and 121 came together to hold a town-wide Pinewood Derby on Saturday, March 11. The event was held at the Auburn Mall, where the Sears foyer area was transformed into a miniature racing complex.
The scouts each start with a Pinewood Derby Car kit, which is then customized to each scout’s individual design.
The track is an approximately 35 foot slope with 4 lanes and an electronic finish signal to confirm the winners of each heat. The tournament basically runs in heats, with winners of each heat moving on. Th winners from each Pack went on to the town-wide race off.
The winners of the Town Wide Race Off were: 3rd place Adam Maillet Pack 53; 2nd place Owen Sanford Pack 121; 1st place Jeremy Swank Pack 121. Pack 121 also had the overall best pack time for the Town Wide Race Off and took home the Speed Stick until next year’s race.
The winner for the fan favorite car design was Nathan Castellano of Pack 53.
The Scouts would like to thank the Simon Properties/Auburn Mall for hosting the event. They also thank the Diamond Auto Group which sponsored the award trophies for this year’s Derby.
All three Packs thank the “Track Guys”, 3 dedicated volunteer Scouters, who transport and set up the classic wooden pinewood derby track and oversee all the races on their own time, all for the joy of watching scouts race and have fun.
During the event, the scouts, families and spectators donated their spare change to support Project Nova’s Badges & Books program, which will provide books to Auburn Police and Fire to share with children during emergencies.
