On Saturday night, the Auburn Fire Department took to the ice to benefit the family of Police Officer Ronald Tarentino, Jr. Their opponent at Horgan Arena was the Coast Guard Hockey Team comprised of active duty personnel from the Boston station, and they were good. So good, in fact, that Auburn lost 9-4.

Auburn’s team consisted of APD Officer Paul Lombardi, and Auburn firefighters Justin Brigham, Scott Davis and Rick Nicholson who organized the fundraiser. Former firefighters Eric Otterson and Matt Ethier also laced up for the game, and they were joined by some Worcester firefighters and a few friends to get enough bodies for a team.

The event started with Auburn Firefighter Luis Mateo skillfully singing The National Anthem. When the puck dropped, the Coast Guard took immediate control, and that lasted for most of the game. They were up 3-1 after one period, 9-3 after two, and 9-4 at the end. The Guard eased up a bit in the last period which had to be a relief for Auburn Goalie Scott Davis who had multiple great saves during the game. A keeper can’t, however, stop the type of assault that the Coast Guard put forth, and drug smugglers in boats should take note of this fact.

Congratulations to all the volunteers and participants who made this event a great success.
