The boys varsity team suffered a tough loss to Leicester, 75-52, on Tuesday’s home opener. Senior Matthew Morrow, the tallest person in the gymnasium without a doubt, racked up 27 points and 15 boards for the Wolverines while teammate Connor Enberg scored 20 points and 15 rebounds.

The Rockets were down 17-10 after one quarter, and they tied 25-25 with 3:37 left in the half. But, this is the closest Auburn would come to a lead. They fell behind 52-39 after 3, and the Wolverines pilled on the points in the 4th. Luke Matthews led the Rockets with 12 points while Tyler Judice and Marc Louis both scored 10. Craigon Confer contributed 7.

There were a lot of substitutions during the game as Coach Andy Niedzwiecki tried to find the right combinations to have on the court. After the game he commented about his team’s intensity, “I liked our effort. We need that effect every day to prepare in practice.”

Let’s hope they do because there is a lot of talent on this squad.

The previous JV game was a thriller, and Auburn topped Leicester 74-68 in overtime. The Rockets led at the half 35-29, but the Wolverines tied it up, 49-49, in the third and led 55-54 with about five minutes left in the game. With 8.1 seconds left and the game tied 61-61, Auburn stopped Leicester at the net and a 4-minute overtime began.

It took 45 seconds for the Rockets to score a 2 and a 3, and it went back and forth until it was 69-68 for the home team with 1:04 remaining. An Auburn steal and basket made it 71-68, and they added 3 more points to make it 74-68 with both teams in the double bonus.

Coleman Picard led the Rockets with 23 points while Josh Adams had 21 and Jason Henry had 15. Great game guys! Keep doing it.
