Memorial field was buzzing on Wednesday night as the Rockets downed Tyngsborough, 4-3, in a real nail biter that included 2 overtime periods and 10 penalty kicks in a shoot out to end the game.
Auburn’s Jianna Baroni, with Alexa Katsoulis assisting, put the first point on the board in the 29th minute, but the Tigers responded with three goals to put the Rockets down 3-1 well into the second half. In the 71st minute, Katsoulis assisted Jordyn Abasciano as she grabbed an opportunity close to the Tyngsborough net. Abasciano popped the ball over the goalie’s head to make the score 3-2.
In the 78th minute, Sam Moreau was fouled and earned a direct kick from about 30 yards out. Coach Larry Midura called a timeout before she kicked, and the resulting shot sailed over the Tiger defensive wall and out of reach of the keeper. The regular game ended tied, 3-3.
Two ten-minute sudden death overtime periods failed to see a goal, so the game progressed to a shoot out with penalty kicks. Auburn’s fourth shooter, Colleen Cutting, hit the upper left corner to take the lead, but the next Tyngsborough kicker got past goalie Sarah Fahey to tie it up once again.
Next up for the Rockets was Jackie Landry who scored on another nice shot to the upper left. The Tigers’ last kicker missed the net, and Fahey is credited with 16 saves on the night.
The 13-4-2 Rockets will face 16-0-2 Millbury at 5:15pm tonight at the Elmwood St. field.
