Auburn has played some tough games against Shrewsbury National this season. Thursday night’s District 5 semifinal game was not one of those barn burners, with Auburn taking the game 11-0.
The game was played at Millbury’s Washington St. Field – a neutral site. Auburn was the visiting team as decided by coin toss, which meant they batted first. They took advantage of the opportunity right out of the gate.
Shrewsbury retired Auburn’s leadoff hitter on an infield ground ball to third. Auburn’s second batter launched a deep drive to left center. But it was a loud out as Shrewsbury’s left field made an outstanding backhand, over-the-shoulder grab. Auburn’s next two batters reached base on hard line drives, bringing up Nigel Belgrave. Belgrave promptly launched a three-run line drive home run almost directly over a “Hit it Here” sign in right center field.
Auburn was up 3-0 and never looked back. Auburn pitcher Coleman Picard and Auburn’s defense shut down Shrewsbury the entire game.
The Auburn Major League All Stars advance to the quarterfinals against Grafton Saturday night at 7pm at Washington St. Field in Millbury.
