Three Pointers Nearly Indefensible
By John Anderson
On Wednesday, Auburn defeated Oxford 62-47, but on Friday they lost to Quaboag 70-64. The Pirates put up 8 three-pointers on Wednesday, and this kept them in the game. The Rockets half-time lead of 3 was extended to 15 by the end of the game.
While Auburn’s offense was nicely distributed, the evening belonged to Ryan Kozlowski who racked up 19 points including 1 from downtown. Mike Thomas and DJ Scavone each contributed 12.
The visiting Cougars on Friday only completed 8 two-point shots, but they sunk their fangs in deep with their three-pointers, 14 in all. The Rockets put up the first points, and defended their net well from attacks in the paint.
Quaboag adapted by moving to the outside and shooting three’s, capturing their offensive rebounds and trying for two. The half ended with Quaboag up 34-28.
The Cougars got into foul trouble in the third, but their 3-point shots made this irrelevant. Giving away a point or two at the foul line doesn’t matter when your drilling 3’ like an NBA team. Quaboag had 10 fouls by the end of the quarter.
Quaboag slowed down their play in the fourth, and Auburn pulled within four points, 64-68. The Cougars only got three more fouls, and now it was the Rockets turn. Sadly, Auburn was in this game until the last two minutes when they started the foul game and collected 8.
DJ Scavone led his team with a game high 33 points, and Mike Thomas had 14. The Rockets collected 16 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. The team is now 7-3 and half way through their season. They play Northbridge home tonight.
Coach Andy Niedzwiecki said, “We did a lot of great things tonight. Quaboag is an exceptional team.” He added, “We have to develop the mental toughness.”
The girls also lost to Quaboag this week, 53-46. They are now 8-3 and face Northbridge away on Tuesday.
