Season Opener 8-0 Over Uxbridge
By John Anderson
As the parent of a boy, and as the parent of a soccer player, I’ve never watched more than a few minutes of an Auburn Varsity Field Hockey game. I was pleasantly entertained on Thursday afternoon when they bested Uxbridge in the season opener. The ball rarely got onto Auburn’s side of the field, and when it did, it was quickly returned to the Uxbridge end.
Skillful stick and ball handling combined with solid strategy gave the Rockets an early advantage. At less than 4 minutes into the first half, Jamie McNamara scored an unassisted goal. 5:30 later, McNamara scored again assisted by Lyndsey Gabrielian. With 9:42 left in the half, Jackie Matthews found the net assisted by McNamara, and at 7:18, McNamara secured the hat trick, scoring again with the help of Jordan Lavallee.
At 18:05 in the second half, McNamara scored her fourth goal of the afternoon assisted again by Gabrielian. Less than a minute later, Jordan Lavallee had a solo score, and about 4 minutes later, Tayla Foulkrod scored Shannon Hynes getting the assist. With 4:15 left in the match, Casey Gurlitz put the ball home assisted by Tayla Foulkrod.
Jamie McNamara led the Rockets with 4 goals, 1 assist, and 9 shots on goal. Midfielder Paige Laperle followed with 8 shots on goal. After the game Coach Bethann Cormier said “We’re very excited about this season. We have 8 seniors who are ready to go.” These girls have been playing together for years and they know each other well. Many were on Middle School teams together and they have a great attitude.”
While today’s win was led by the scoring from Jamie McNamara, she didn’t do it alone. Coach Cormier pointed out that senior captain Erin Collins in defense along with senior captain Paige Laperle and senior Jackie Matthews in midfield kept the ball at the Uxbridge end. Combined, these four players had a great game as did their teammates who all contributed.
Today was a solid start for what looks to be a very promising season and post season run.
