The Auburn High School Boys Varsity Soccer team soundly beat Tahanto Regional 3-1 in a scrimmage Tuesday afternoon on Memorial Field. Both schools are placed by MIAA in Division 3 for the fall season. Tahanto Regional takes in players from West Boylston Middle/High School for a combined total of 257 eligible boys. Auburn has 331 eligible boys.
Auburn came out strong in the first 20 minute period with solid ball movement and numerous scoring opportunities although none entered the net. Coach Chris Bailey said the team has been working really hard since formal practices began last week and he is very optimistic about the season.
“The players are showing good attitudes”, he commented.
In the second, senior captain Connor Aubuchont took a corner kick that deflected off two players in the box before junior Steve Racine turned the ball, shot and scored. In the third, junior Richard Augusto weaved through the Tahanto defense and drilled a shot from 15 yards out.
Tahanto scored in the fourth, but Augusto again found the net and Auburn ended up by two. The Rockets would have had more points if Tahanto junior Edward Salate wasn’t on the field. Edward interrupted numerous drives and seemed to be everywhere on defense. His skill and determination were reminiscent of recent AHS graduate Jon Luks.
Several Auburn junior varsity players got some good time today, and junior Adam Gillies did very well as goal keeper. Coach Bailey added that he was “anxious to get it going” this season.
