At last night’s Board of Selectmen’s meeting, Town Manager Julie Jacobson announced the upcoming Citizens Leadership Academy that will begin on March 22nd and run on Thursdays from 6:00-8:30PM for 10 weeks. The Academy is one of the goals set by the Board of Selectmen for the Town Manager in FY2018.

In her announcement letter to the Board, Jacobson wrote, “We have met with each department and division head who will be involved in the Academy to develop a ten-week series of informative, educational, interesting and interactive sessions to inform participants of the intricacies of Auburn’s municipal government.”

She added, “Our goal is to infuse an interest in and deeper understanding of local government and to hopefully aid in the development of a future pool of informed residents who are willing to serve as local leaders on boards, committees and commissions with the Auburn community.”

Participation in the Citizens Fire Academy and Citizens Police Academy has been solid over the last few years, and Jacobson expects an equally positive response for this project. “This is a great opportunity for residents to learn about their community. Hopefully, they will then get more involved.”

The Academy targets Auburn residents of at least one year although non-residents who work in Auburn will also be considered, space permitting. Applicants must be 18 years old by July 1, 2017 and be a registered voter. They also must pass a background check and sign a waiver.

Interested residents can call 508-832-7720 for an application or go to Applications can be submitted online and are due on February 23rd.

When asked about the Academy, Select Board Chairman Doreen Goodrich responded, “Having attended both the police and fire citizens academies, I’m excited for residents to have this opportunity. It’s important for residents to see the operation of their town with accurate and open information. I was pleased my fellow board members supported this as a goal for the manager.”

Do not miss this opportunity to learn more about Auburn. It would be particularly useful to anyone thinking of running for an elected position in the future.
