It wasn’t that many years ago when girls hockey was no more than a club at Auburn High School. Now it is a full-fledged varsity sport, and participation levels have allowed for a JV team in some years. This year’s team is 31 strong under the continued leadership of Coach Pete Laprad.
The Rockets, a co-op team involving several other high schools, currently have a 3-5-2 record in a conference of 5 schools. They are ranked #3 behind powerhouses Shrewsbury and Longmeadow and ahead of Algonquin/Hudson and Leominster/St. Bernard’s. Traditional divisional play just doesn’t work with so few teams, and Auburn’s competition can be quite stiff.
Today’s slideshow is from Saturday’s 1-1 tie against Bishop Fenwick when freshman Delaney Novick scored the Rockets’ only goal in the second period with Julia Siemen and Catie Proulx assisting. Senior Colleen Fellows made 25 saves for the home team against an ever-improving Bishop Fenwick squad.
Last night, the Rockets tied St. Peter-Marian 1-1, and they will play again on Saturday evening when Auburn’s 1968 boys hockey team will be recognized on the 50th anniversary of their state championship.
