Last Wednesday’s rain prevented quite a few opening games both home and away, and the soccer teams won’t hit the field until later today. Everyone else, however, got in game 1 with some mixed results. Every year brings both player and coaching changes across the system, so it is hard to make any seasonal predictions until it happens.

Boys Golf got an early start on August 31st with a win over Leicester. They now have a 2-2 record. The high school cross country teams had a beautiful afternoon for their meets last Thursday, and the boys claimed two victories against over Northbridge and Leicester. The girls split their meet with a victory over the Rams and a loss to the Wolverines. On Saturday, the Rockets were on the gridiron at St. Peter-Marian where they suffered a tough 20-0 loss. Remember, it’s still early in the season.

After seeing the JV field hockey team secure a 1-0 victory in the afternoon, the varsity girls took to the field against the Spartans. Under the leadership of new captains Erin Creagh, Colleen Fellows and Julianna Martinelli, the Rockets spent much of the first half learning how to work together for the first time under game pressure, and they came up empty on several solid drives to the Uxbridge net.

The second half, however, was nothing shy of amazing as the Rockets assaulted the net for nearly 25 minutes straight. If it were not for the stubbornness and skill of the Spartan keeper, there would have been multiple scores, but it took those 25 minutes to get past her. Molly Lovely took a shot from the edge of the circle that Katelyn Cormier propelled towards the net for the assist. Freshman Grace Foulkrod, waiting at the side of the net, sent it home for her first varsity goal at Auburn High.

After the game, Foulkrod shied away from credit and said, “It was a team effort. It took eleven girls to make that score.” Martinelli confirmed, “We’ll take it” while Fellows added, “We’re going to progress as this season continues.” Well, a W out of the box is not a bad start. Have a great year!

Girls varsity soccer plays at 3:30pm today in Grafton while the boys host the Indians at 7:00pm.
