Wet and raw are two good words to describe Friday’s field hockey games that closed the regular season. The JV girls won 4-0 in a game against Hopedale that was solid from most any angle, and one of today’s slide shows reflects just that. The varsity squad won 2-1, which gave them a season record of 12-3-3 and earned them the 4th seed in the MIAA Central Division 2 Tournament.

A total of 20 teams are in this year’s playoffs, and 10 actually have byes in today’s preliminary round. Auburn will face either Sutton (13) or Murcock (20) at home on Friday at 4:00pm. Quaboag, which Auburn tied earlier this season, was seeded first with a record of 14-2-2 although Nipmuc had a record of 15-0-3. Tournaments are always interesting.

Hopedale has consistently been a tough opponent, and Friday was no exception. Some confusion around the Blue Raiders’ goal allowed Colleen Fellows to score in the first half, but a packed semicircle in the second allowed Hopedale to tie it up.

Watching Kileigh Hynes move the ball 30 or more yards down the field without a steal is wonderful, and it was obviously frustrating to the Blue Raiders. In the semi, a Hopedale Captain elbowed Hynes away from the ball and led to a corner and Auburn’s second goal to give them the lead again. Molly Cutting got the goal and Fellows earned the assist under a steady rain.

Photography in the rain is always a challenge, but viewers can still get an appreciation for what these fine players endure on a regular basis. Good luck in the tournament ladies!
