Sunday’s field hockey game was not only the quarter final in the MIAA Central D2 Tournament but also the final game at home for the seniors. Nobody on the field takes this as emotionally as Coach Bethann Cormier who has a long-term bond with each of these girls. When this annual game is a victory, Cormier appears relieved but saddened at the same time. They’ve spent a lot of time together including three state championship games, and the season end is inevitably approaching.
Blackstone Valley Tech was the only vocational school to make it into the quarterfinals, but they were no match for Auburn. The Beavers could not get any offense going against the Rockets, and goalie Paige Lefrancois didn’t have to make a single save. She said, “I never get distracted. I just watch and support my teammates.”
Halfway through the first half, Colleen Fellows scored with an assist by Sophia Laperle in what was essentially the winning goal. Kileith Hynes scored unassisted later in the half and again in the second. The final score was 3-0, and now they face rival #1 Quaboag tonight at 5:15 in Lunenburg. Their game earlier in the fall ended 1-1, but a victory is very possible for Auburn tonight. Go get ‘em ladies!
