Her husband of 45 years, the former Massachusetts State Representative Robert X. Tivnan, died in 2011.
Marie leaves three children, Siobhan Tivnan and her partner Sean O’Toole of Co. Galway, Ireland, two sons, Thomas Tivnan and his partner Anna-Marie Crowhurst of London, and Sean Tivnan and his partner Cheryl Minkema of Millbury; a granddaughter Elizabeth LaMay; and a grandson Liam Tivnan.
She also leaves her sister Pauline (Hamel) Lieuzzi of New Bern, North Carolina. Her other siblings Gloria (Hamel) Dennis, Fred Hamel and Mihel Hamel all predeceased her.
Marie was born in West Brookfield, son of Thomas G. and Victoria (Quaglia) Hamel. She has lived in Auburn more than 40 years.
Marie attended Warren High School and New York University.
Marie was a supervisor at the Friendly’s Restaurant in Auburn for many years.
She was a longtime member of North American Martyrs Church where she has been the parish organist for 35 years. She also sang with the parish choir.
In addition to being a talented musician, Marie was an accomplished artist. She painted beautifully in oils and pastels, and sometimes did drawings in pencil. She also created gorgeous sculptures.
Marie was a longtime volunteer in the Camp Fire Girls organization, and coached her children in softball and soccer for many years. She was member of the Auburn Historical Society and a supporter of many ecological causes, particularly the Defenders of Wildlife.
Calling hours are Thursday, October 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Friday, October 28, from the funeral home with a Mass at 11 a.m. in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive, Auburn. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester, will be private.
