Racing the clock and the weather, over 300 runners participated in Sunday’s 4th annual Auburn Rocket Race and Fun Run.

The morning started off cool and misty, which did not dampen the spirits of the 60 or so youngsters lined up at the AHS track to participate in the Fun Run. Led by Jake the Worcester Bravehearts Mascot, the kids went through a quick stretching routine then raced two laps around the track.

At about 9am, the 5K stepped off, under the still-threatening skies. About 20 minutes later, the men’s winner, Joseph Walsh crossed the finish line. In doing so, Walsh, 16, was the men’s winner, the under men’s under 19 winner, and the overall race leader.

The women’s winner was Christine Hilditch with a time just over 14 minutes. Hanorah Murphy, 11,  grabbed the under 19 women’s crown and was the fourth female overall, with a time 25:02.

In addition to the 99 RaceWire-timed participants, there were approximately 200 additional walkers and runners on hand just to support AYFS.

“We have a record number of runners and a record number of sponsors,” said one of the race organizers, Dorothy Kauffman. “We’re so grateful for the support of the community to support Auburn Youth and Family Services.”

As runners crossed the finish line, ominous clouds pushed across the sky over Auburn High School until the skies finally opened up.  While short-lived, the rainstorm was enough to soak participants (who enjoyed the rain) and spectators (not so much), and send people running for cover.

At any rate, the event was, again, a tremendous success. “We are so blessed to have people who support AYFS like this” said Sally D’Arcangelo, executive director of AYFS. “This community is wonderful.”
