On July 30, the Auburn Sportsman’s Club hosted the 5th annual Women in the Outdoors program sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation Central Massachusetts Chapter.

The event drew over 140 women from all 6 New England states to participate in a wide range of outdoor-related workshops and hands-on sessions.

According to Kelly Dalbec, one of the event organizers, this is one the premier events in the country. “We have held the event for four years, and each year we have been awarded the NWTF’s ‘Best Special Event’ award” said Dalbec. “We hope this year makes it five.”

Women who enrolled in the program could choose from more than 30 classes and workshops designed to expose women to new experiences and teach valuable skills. Participants were able to try out archery, target shooting, fishing and axe-throwing. There were also a number of workshops focused on teaching new skills such as self-defense, wilderness survival, wild edibles, and game processing.

“We really want to give these women a chance to experience new things, but also to take them a little out of their comfort zone” said Dalbec. “Knowledge is power.”
