Joyce was born in Worcester and raised in Auburn, the eldest child of the late John and Esther (Joyce) Averka. She graduated from Auburn High School in 1946, and completed further training as a dental assistant and in business. A woman of intelligence and many talents, she worked in various capacities as a dental assistant, bookkeeper, radio announcer, and office manager. She ran her household, cared for her family, and was in fact the center of her family and the glue that held it together.
Joyce was married 66 years to her dear husband Frank who predeceased her in 2013. She leaves her daughter Marsha McCarthy of West Yarmouth, son Ronald Bottom of Auburn, and daughter Joyce McGovern of West Yarmouth; four grandchildren: Jason Engard, Mark Engard, Jonathan Bottom, and Christina Bottom; great granddaughter, Charlotte Engard; sister, Jacqueline Norman of Douglas, several nieces and nephews, and many friends. A brother, C. David Averka, and grandsons James and Michael Engard predeceased her.
Joyce was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was also a mother to many and a master of the art of hospitality, enjoyed hosting Swedish students and entertaining friends, all of whom became part of the family. She played the piano and organ, enjoyed knitting and sewing, and loved sports, especially the Red Sox who she coached for years from the comfort of her home. She made the perfect apple pie, hated peas with a passion, and loved children and animals. She was an amazing, courageous, organized, generous, funny, and giving person who loved unconditionally and touched many lives. Her loved ones will always miss her and hold her in their hearts.
