The Special Olympics of Massachusetts is coming to Auburn for the eighth consecutive year this weekend, March 12-13.
Auburn High will host the unified basketball events, and bowling will be held at AMF Auburn Lanes.
This year, Pappas has announced a craft fair will be held at Auburn High to complement the Special Olympics games. The craft fair will run from 9am to 3pm in conjunction with the unified basketball contests.
The Dreamakers Unified Cheer will be performing and cheering on the basketball teams. The AHS cheerleaders are participating in States this weekend, but will also try to have a presence at the games. In addition, Leicester girls basketball will be sending volunteers, and the Mass College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) College of Optometry will be conducting vision screenings.
There will be a formal opening ceremony at 12pm Satruday, March 12, with guest speakers including professional golfer Jim Remy, State Senator Michael O. Moore and State Representative Paul Frost.
“So many people and groups in the community help make this event a huge success” said Pappas about the event. “From the Auburn-Webster Elks providing 500 hot lunches to Girl Scouts running activities for the participants between games, to the student volunteers. This is why Special Olympics wants to keep coming back to our Town.”
“Special Olympics offer the highest quality Olympic-style sports training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities. This changes attitudes and changes lives” said Special Olympics
of Massachusetts president, Mary Beth McMahon. “.Special Olympics Massachusetts athletes gain confidence and build positive self-images, which they take with them into their homes, classrooms, jobs, and communities.”
The sporting events will take place on Saturday March 12 and Sunday March 13, 2016 from 9am to 3pm at both Auburn High and AMF Lanes.
