COLCHESTER, Vt. – Eighteen members of the Saint Michael’s College field hockey team, including Auburn’s Jackie Mathews, qualified for the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Collegiate Division II National Academic Squad for this past fall, while the Purple Knights earned an NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Team Award for the 12th consecutive year.
Senior Kelsie Miller (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional) and first-year Nicole White (Cranston, R.I./Lincoln School) not only qualified for the National Academic Squad but were also among 61 Division II student-athletes to be named NFHCA Scholars of Distinction for putting together a cumulative 3.90 grade-point average through the first semester of the 2015-16 school year. Miller earned the honor for the third consecutive season.
Miller and seniors Megan Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) and Mackenzie Hudson (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) were among 33 players to land on the National Academic Squad for the fourth time in their careers, as 19 hailed from the Northeast-10 Conference. With 18 of the 24 student-athletes on its roster being honored, Saint Michael’s tied for the NE-10 lead in National Academic Squad qualifiers while falling one player short of two national leaders. The Purple Knights are one of 27 programs to draw the team accolade, with 11 from the NE-10.
In addition to Deschaine, Hudson, Miller and White, those honored on the National Academic Squad were senior Morgan Mazanec (Shelburne, Mass./Mohawk Trail Regional); juniors Kate Baltich (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker), Abby Dusha (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central School), Rachel Kucharski (Exeter, N.H./Exeter), Jacqueline Lalla (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W.
