Anthony and Jake came to Swanson Road Elementary School last Friday to do some reading and present a challenge to the grade 3-5 students. Anthony Cahill is the Assistant General Manager of the Worcester Bravehearts, and Jake is their mascot.
While Anthony read Dan Gutman’s book Casey Back at Bat, Jake provided some visual entertainment during the three grade specific presentations. This book is a modern continuation of the classic 1888 poem “Casey at the Bat: A Ballad of the Republic Sung in the Year 1888” written by Worcester resident Ernest Thayer.
The challenge presented to the eager SWIS students was quite simple: Read ten books; Have your teacher sign off on the reading; Send in your reading list and receive a ticket to a Braveheart game. This challenge is part of the Exercise Your Mind program.
The Bravehearts have presented the reading challenge at 17 greater Worcester schools and to 6,000 students. Judging by the student’s response on Friday, the Bravehearts will be giving away about 600 more tickets.
