With Tantasqua and Northbridge as the only two facilities available for indoor track meets, the gyms are a crowded place. Last Wednesday, Auburn was one of six area high schools to participate as the Rockets faced Leicester, Tantasqua and, for the girls, Notre Dame. Under these conditions, a team does not have to run the fastest, jump the highest or throw the longest to win. It just has to top the teams in their meet. And if another team is leading the way, there is target to pursue.

The boys beat Leicester 60-26 but fell to Tantasqua 59-27. The girls earned a hat trick by winning against Tantasqua 47.5-38.5, Notre Dame 49.5-35.5, and Leicester 58-27. Coach Jason Bergman said over 75 students are participating in indoor track this winter, and he did not expect so many.

The boys had first place finishes as follows: 55 Meter Dash – Yuleny Ortiz, 3-way tie at 6.9 sec; 2 Mile Run – Marcus LaPointe, 11:27.10; and Shot Put – Zachary Randall, 44’ 6.25”. Girls top finishers were: 55 Meter Hurdles – Megan Gurlitz, 9.4 sec; and 4×200 Meter Relay, 2:03.80. These finishes are for all six schools in attendance.

Of particular note, the girls claimed three wins, including tough Tantasqua, without Sarah Cavanaugh and Andrea Bolduc who were sidelined with injuries. Like our Patriots, the girls stepped up and found the route to victory. Great job!

This was an excellent start to the season, and Auburn Mass Daily looks forward to continuing coverage.
